Adult group facilitator

Position Summary:

As a Support Group Facilitator volunteer, you will work alongside our support workers to create a safe and inclusive environment where individuals impacted by another person’s drug and/or alcohol use can share their thoughts, experiences, and emotions. Together, we aim to provide social and educational support that helps group members cope and manage more effectively. This role can be conducted either in-person or virtually.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with our support workers to facilitate support groups for individuals affected by drug and/or alcohol use, offering both social and educational support.
  • Assist in ensuring a positive and supportive experience for all group attendees.
  • Proactively provide information and make appropriate referrals to connect individuals with additional Family Support Link services and volunteer opportunities.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent listening and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to be empathetic and separate personal needs from the needs of the group.
  • Ability to redirect and facilitate group discussions effectively.
  • Create and maintain a safe environment where participants’ thoughts and feelings are valued, and where fairness, equity, and respect are practiced.
  • Strong passion for Family Support Link’s mission.
  • Proficiency in using virtual group platforms (for virtual groups only).

Supporting you:

  • Comprehensive induction into the role and thorough guidance on Family Support Link’s operations.
  • Ongoing support and assistance from the Operational Manager throughout your volunteer journey.
  • Reimbursement for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred while carrying out volunteer duties.
  • Access to a wide range of training opportunities and events to enhance your skills and knowledge.

Time Commitment:

Our support groups run weekly, and we are seeking support group facilitators who can commit a minimum of 2-3 hours per week.

We greatly appreciate the value that volunteers bring to our charity, and if you are interested in dedicating more of your time, we are always open to discussing additional volunteer opportunities with you.
